Capture and edit features

You can capture the tree that you just planted. You can also correct a species name, or delete the record of a stump that is no longer there.

Add a feature

To add a feature, use the add button at the bottom right of the feature list. In our example, the button shows Add Tree.

1. Press the add button.
2. In the panel, choose how to place the new feature:
   • Address or coordinates: type an address or coordinates in the location box.
   • Pick on map: click the map where the feature goes.
   • Device location: place the feature at your device’s position.
   • Paste: place a feature that you copied.

To choose a method before you start, press the chevron on the button’s edge. The next time that you press the button, Groundwork uses the method that you used last.

On a line layer or a polygon layer, each point that you place adds a vertex to the feature.

• When the line or polygon has enough vertices, press Stop drawing to complete it.
• To cancel the feature, press Cancel drawing.

Copy and paste a feature

To add many features that are almost the same, such as a row of fence posts, copy the first feature.

1. Press the copy button below the first fence post’s title.
2. Press the add button.
3. Press Paste.
4. Choose where to put the copy:
   • New location: Groundwork uses the copied feature’s details, and you place its geometry.
   • Original location: Groundwork makes a duplicate of the feature at the same position.

Update the details

1. Select the feature.
2. Press Update.
3. Change the values.
4. To save, press the tick beside the title. To cancel, press the cross.

If a value is not valid, Groundwork marks the field and shows the problem.

To update the next feature in the list, save your changes first. Then press the next arrow above the title.

Move or reshape a feature

1. Press Update.
2. On the map, drag the feature or its vertices.

To see the actions for a position on the map, right-click it. On a touch screen, press and hold the position. The actions include Move point here and Add vertex.

Also good to know

• Measurements. To see the measurements of a line or polygon feature, open the feature. Then press the ruler button below its title. The map shows the length of each segment. It also shows the total length of a line, or the area and perimeter of a polygon. To see the measurements while you draw a new line or polygon, tick Show measurements.
• Delete a feature. To delete a feature, press Update. Then press the trash icon beside the tick and the cross. Groundwork asks you to confirm before it deletes the feature.
• Download a layer. To save a layer to a file on your device, press Download in the layer’s ⋮ menu. The file includes edits that are not yet saved to the map’s data source. Groundwork shows some layers as an image of their data. These layers do not have Download.
• Saved changes. When you save a change on a map that you can edit, Groundwork writes the change to the map’s data source. Your teammates can then see it. On a demo map, Groundwork saves your edits on your device only. The edits reset when you reload the page. On some maps, your teammates’ changes show on your screen while you have the map open.
